Enna - high in the sky

We landed late at night in Catannia and decided that we wanted to head straight out of the city and gain a bit of ground on our road trip for the morning.

This meant that we arrived in Enna in the dark with very little idea of our surroundings.  The landscape was in darkness and we could only tell that we were ascending high into the mountain by the winding road that seemed to go on forever.

We finally arrived at the top of the hill - and in the town square - which was still very much alive and buzzing with activity.

We made our way to our apartment which promised a balcony with a mountain view.  The balcony was there but it was pitch black so we could only presume that some where there was a mountain - a theory that was backed by the three red flashing lights presumably for the planes.

When we opened the curtains the following morning our breath was taken away by the sheer vastness and beauty of what lay before us.

Arriving in the dark and having no pre concieved idea of what the landscape would be left us in absolute awe.

At almost 1,000 meters above sea level Enna has the highest elevation of any provincial capital in Europe
