Scala dei Turchi

This was a must visit for our trip but be prepared for a long steep hike down to the beach (going down not too bad - but remember you've got to get back up too!), and for it to be very busy. Once you are down on the beach there isnt much in the way of facilities so make sure you take plenty of water.

From the accessible beach side the cliffs are very impressive - but they are 'policed' and you are not allowed on the rocks - although the protectors of the rocks seem to leave around 5pm and then it was a free for all as swimmers climbed onto the rocks and walked around the corner to watch the sun set.

If you are looking to photograph the sun setting you dont need to go down to the beach - save your legs - drive a bit further up the road and you will the crowds gathering, and cars precariously abandoned on the roadsides.  But it is worth it.

The white cliffs of the Scala dei Turchi are made of marl, an unconsolidated sedimentary rock consisting of clay and lime, with a beautiful pure white color
